Sharing One’s Heart Through Volunteering
April is National Volunteer Month, a time dedicated to honoring the individuals who lend their time, talent, and heart to their communities. Volunteering in hospice care is a unique journey that transforms lives on both sides of the bedside. For our patients, a volunteer represents a window to the world, a listening ear, and a reminder that they are valued. For the volunteer, the experience offers a profound sense of purpose, a new perspective on life, and the deep satisfaction of having made a tangible difference during a sacred time.
A Gift for Every Stage of Life
No matter where you are in your own life’s journey, there is a place for you here. We see the incredible impact our diverse team of volunteers makes every day:
- Building a Foundation: For those just starting their careers or educational paths, volunteering provides invaluable real-life experience. It builds the leadership and empathy skills that colleges and employers look for, while helping fulfill scholarship and application requirements.
- Finding Balance and Connection: For those in the busy middle years of life, volunteering offers a meaningful way to give back and reconnect with the community. It provides a “servant’s heart” outlet that balances the demands of daily life with a sense of profound contribution.
- Sharing Wisdom and Legacy: For those with a lifetime of experience, volunteering is a powerful way to stay active and engaged. Sharing your wisdom and companionship provides a vital sense of community and ensures your skills continue to brighten the lives of others.

7 Ways You Can Make a Difference
We offer a variety of roles to fit your unique talents and schedule:
- Patient Visit Volunteers: Be a companion. Share stories, read the paper, watch a favorite movie, or simply provide a caring presence to counter loneliness.
- Vet-to-Vet Volunteers: Veterans have a unique bond. Use your shared history to connect with fellow service members through conversation, life reviews, or “We Honor Veterans” ceremonies.
- Office Volunteers: Help our mission from behind the scenes. Assist with medical records, prepare admission packets, and help our coordinators during office hours (M-F, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM).
- Pet Volunteers: If you have a certified therapy pet, you can bring joy and smiles to patients in their homes or facilities. (Requires certification, shot records, and insurance.)
- 11th Hour Volunteers: Provide a peaceful, quiet presence for patients and families during the final hours of life. This is a special, intermittent role with dedicated training.
- Remembrance Bear Volunteers: If you have a sewing machine and a heart for crafts, you can hand-stitch “Remembrance Bears” using a patient’s favorite clothing to create a lasting keepsake for their family.
- Student Volunteers: We offer a personalized experience for high school and college students looking to gain perspective and give back while meeting their community service goals.
